Seaweed Jewellery

About the collection

This collection was a collaboration with my good friend Zuhairah Dindar. We met at uni when we were both studying science and fine arts. She continued with her science degree, recently completing her honours in marine science and is about to start a PhD! Her research included studying the ways climate change can cause seaweed forests to shift into different species. She also does painting commissions and freelance scientific illustrations which have been featured in many scientific papers. She illustrated the hormosira and phyllospora drawings at the top and bottom of this page. You can find more of her creative work on Instagram @zuhairahisartsy.

We created a collection of handmade jewellery using our local seaweeds which we collected from wrack washed up on the beach in Dharawal country (Cronulla). We dried, casted and fabricated the seaweed into sterling silver jewellery.

The seaweeds we used are: Crayweed (Phyllospora comosa) and Neptuneā€™s necklace (Hormosira banksii).

We are two friends who are both ecologists and artists who want to translate the beauty of seaweed into wearable pieces of art. You can also find us on etsy as AlgaStudio.

Seaweeds are the trees of the sea and provide homes and food for many types of sea creatures. They even help absorb carbon in the atmosphere to help humans in the fight against climate change. But for a lot of people, they have only seen seaweeds washed up at the beach, and have not had the opportunity to witness the mystical aura of being underwater in a seaweed forest. Therefore, we turned two of our local seaweeds into beautiful, and timeless pieces, that capture the magic of ocean plants. Each piece is one of a kind and handmade in recycled sterling silver. We hope that this collection encourages you to learn more about our oceans, and will give you a piece of the sea to wear every day.
